I am wanting to take the night train from Prague to Budapest in May. Does anyone know how much this might cost and if we need to book in advance?
Also if we do have to book in advance, is there any way to do this online? If not, how else can I book?
Thanks for any help!

Most people recommend just booking when you arrive. I was nervous about doing that preferring to have my trip set up before I leave but honestly it worked out fine and I took the train from Krakow to Prague to Budapest to Vienna and bought my tickets upon arriving in each city for the next city I was headed to.
It helped to print out the itinerary from the train websites so it was clear what you wanted.
I think the only way to buy in advance is through Rail Europe which charges a premium to do so and no one seems to recommend.
I%26#39;m sorry I don%26#39;t know the price of the overnight train. I took the day train. But this other post discusses the prices.

I do not remember the price for tickets from PRG-BUD. We did this in October 2007. Rode 2nd class which is a little less expensive, but seats still just fine. Book when you get to Prague. Go to the station (top of Wenceslas, then left a couple of blocks)
I printed out the schedule and train number we wanted (from Rail Europe)prior to leaving home. Also wrote down the date and gave it to the ticket sales person. They don%26#39;t speak much English, but there was absolutely no problem with what I gave her, and we got our tickets without fuss. Do this a couple of days before your journey. The price you pay for the tickets at the station is quite less than what RailEurope has listed.
If you really want the night train, so be it. We wanted to see the countryside, so took a day train. here%26#39;s the schedule.
It was a nice trip.
Have a good trip.

I forgot to post the rest of the schedule, sorry. We decided against stopping in Bratislava, and just took this train all the way to Budapest.

I booked my ticket for a bed in a three-bed cabin on 19. April 08. The price from Praha to Budapest can be separated as
Praha-Kuty 31.80 Euro
Kuty-Rajka 11.60 Euro
Rajka-Budapest 19.00 Euro
and Reservation for the bed is 20 Euro.

Hedpier, thanks for that info! How far in advance did you purchase this ticket?

The fare from Prague to Budapest is EUR 47.50, plus a supplement for a couchette/sleeper. You do not need to book in advance. You cannot do it on-line anyway - Raileurope is a complete rip-off and does not even seem able to list the right times. Look at the advice above about buying tickets - you can get them a couple of days in advance if you want, but you can even buy them on the train.
The night train leaves Prague at 0030 and arrives at 0832 - it is slow, but you should be sleeping throughout the journey anyway - or there is another one at 2147, arriving at 0703. I would rather get the later one as it is of a higher standard.
