Hungary to Prague

My fiance and I are trying to figure out how to get from Budapest to Prague. So far it looks like train is the cheapest option.

Is it safe to take the overnight train from Budapest to Prague? And is it possible to buy tickets online beforehand or can we only buy at the train station in Budapest? And if so, will it be easy to get tickets on the day itself?

The train is your best option - the night train, as you probably know, is the R374 %26#39;Pannonia%26#39; which originates in Bucharest, but there are sleeper and couchette carriages from Budapest to Prague, which are quite safe - just take the usual precautions such as locking doors at night, etc. You could always %26#39;rough it%26#39; in the compartment carriages, but if you do that, go 1st class. You can pull the seats out flat and use them as beds.

Here is a %26#39;map%26#39; of the train for you: http://www.zelpage.cz/razeni/08/vlaky/cd-374

Tickets cannot be bought on-line, and you can get them at the station in Budapest - if you are there a couple of days before, get them then, otherwise it shouldn%26#39;t be a problem to buy on the day - it all depends on whether the sleeper cars are sold out or not. There will always be tickets for the compartment carriages.

At over 10 hours, this train is the longest option, but that doesn%26#39;t matter as you will be tucked up in bed :)

Otherwise you could get the very early 0530 train, arriving at 1225 - you can get tickets on the day.

The other option would mean travelling all day, which is a bit of a waste.

Have fun!
