Hey all wonderful TAs:
A silly but sweet question here:
Where I can find the best cakes and pastries in Prague?
What is the typical pastry for Prague?
Apple Strudel? No, that is a viennese staple.
London does have a lot of cake shops but with a sky-high price. e.g a chocolate and raseberry mousse for 5 pounds!
Looking forward to hear your suggestions
Best,
Cherryx

A US Travel Channel show did a program on Prague and they featured a Strudl shop called %26quot;Susta Strudl%26quot;. I managed to find some info on the internet that said it is at 29 Jeseniova in Prague 3.
Samantha Brown, who hosts the show, said it was suppose to be the best strudl in Europe! Are any of you familiar with this shop and how would you rate it?
We are thinking of checking it out when we are there in May. We are spending a week in Austria before so we should be pretty good judges by the time we get to Prague!

Cafe Louvre has great, thick hot chocolate -- but last time I had a Sachertorte there is was stale.
There is an amazing French patisserie 10 mins walk from Wenceslas Square:

Near Old Town Square, there is Bakeshop Praha:

And a few meters from there is Au Gourmand:

Personally, I%26#39;m not a big fan of many Czech cakes -- often heavy on the whipped cream or with gelatin on top.
A couple of cakes you really must try are Medovnik and Marlenka -- two different types of honey cake. Medovnik has a condensed-milk based cream in it -- Marlenka is more caramel-like.
They are served in restaurants and cafes all around the city. People fall in love with them -- it is one of the most popular posts on my food blog:

It is a small shop, but the pastry is fab. Bit out of the way. Down town try the bake shop on Dlouha, justy off the old town square.

There is a passage way all the way up Wenceslas Square (last passage on the right), there is a kavarna, a small coffee shop and gallery. They serve great coffee and with it comes a small home made croissant - delicious!

I have to agree with Martina the bake shop on Dlouha
is fantastic their quiches are gorgeous as well as their croissants and when we are flying home we always take their sandwiches with us for the journey, their cakes and pastries are lovely too.

Thanks for all your delicious recommandations. I have to watch my waistline during my trip to Prague next weekend. Do people in Prahue have an %26quot;Afternoon Tea%26quot; tradition to have cakes and other pastries?
For Appelstrudel, dear readyinredding:
Viennese cafes do have a huge selection of cakes and strudels. I am not familiar with the US poll on strudels as I live in London. (but familiar with the US Presidential Election)I would say Cafe Landtmann in vienne has got the best strudel in vienna.
Just come back from my Berlin trip, I was really impressed with the warm apple strudel at Kaffe Einstein. It was not a ready-meal choice. But it was a freshly prepared one.
I am jealous that you will visit Austria.
Enjoy, and again, thanks so much for all your help.

On Revolucni 12, near Nam. Republiky, the cake shop %26quot;Apetit%26quot; has reopened, very traditional and old fashioned and cake all over the place. You can have cafe and cake on the small gallery on top. Very cute and I have never seen so many calories at one place before!

Dear Cherryx,
Thanks for the Vienna tip. My husband is of Austrain/Czech heritage and his aunts used to make wonderful studel. Sadly, I never learned from them.
Yes, isn%26#39;t our presidential race great! I was hoping this last week would settle the democrats but no such luck. Looks like they may be fighting it out all summer. Luckily, we will have our 3 week break in Europe and hopefully it%26#39;s not covered as extensively over there!
Well, maybe someone will still respond to the question reguarding Susta Strudl in Prague. We would like to know if it is worth the effort to find it since it is on the outskirts of town.
