Still good value (i think). . .

Hi everybody,

Just returned from my 3rd trip to Prague and enjoyed it immensely as always. Not going to do a trip report as i think there is plenty of those to go around. Was a bit worried about how far our hard-earned cash was going to go over there and yes, while things certainly aren%26#39;t as cheap as they used to be, it was still far more palatable than the %26#39;rip-off%26#39; state that we live in.

Went to %26#39;U Cerneho Vola%26#39; for the first time and loved it - moody barman, moody waiter, surly locals and absolutely fantastic %26#39;Kozel%26#39; beer for 26.50 crowns (approx 88 pence). World Class! Went with the intention of having 2 beers and on our merry way, ended up staying 3 hours and having 8 instead!

We thought Hradcany was really beautiful as well, and not as overun with tourists either.

Top city, top people, can%26#39;t wait to go back!

p.s. Looking to go somewhere new next year (for my annual jaunt with my brother), somewhere Eastern/Central Europe with decent beer and nice surroundings - any suggestions?

Thanks folks

hi Unclelegus,

Went to Riga last year and really enjoyed it (even though it was -15 degrees).

We were giving some consideration to Bratislava (anybody got any thoughts/pointers?)

Thanks everybody

Haven%26#39;t been there yet myself, but Cesky Krumlov looks wonderful. Beautiful scenery and great Beer!

Have you been to Poland, I have been there 4 times, it is a bit more expensive but still real value for money. I go to Wroclaw very busy at week end. But locals are very friendly. As for Brat it%26#39;s not that beautyful but worth a few nights.

I still go back to Prague many times a year the place has a real buzz about it.

Have fun mate

Hi Welthy,

Wroclaw is on our shortlist aswell, but we always travel midweek (usually Monday to Thursday), any ideas what its like in the week? Know what you mean about Prague, wish i could go two or three times a year but being married, having kids, running my own restaurant etc. - IMPOSSIBLE!

Hi GeeMan

Have you been to Budapest ? It is lovely with nice restaurants and good pubs. The sights are great too, I am going to Prague in June and was in Budapest in January. I think Buda is a wee bit bigger than Prague but has all the transport you need, trams, trolleybus and metro system and it sounds a bit like the transport in Prague where you have to validate your tickets.

Yeah, Budapest is a good suggestion! nice city (but not so historic like Prague or elegant as Vienna), nice drinks and don%26#39;t forget Budapest spa, so take your swimming suit :D If you liked Riga, you would definitely enjoy Tallinn, the city is something else, but beautiful and has spirit.

Bratislava is rather small and not interesting I guess, especially in midWEEk.

U Cerneho vola is magnificent place, right? I love the feeling when you had couple of beers, all is nicer, quieter, you walk down towards the castle square and the wonderful panorama opens on your righthand side and you have a feeling that you can fly. Miss it being so far from home at the moment :)

Hello again folks,

Yeah, we did Budapest a couple of years ago and thought it was great. Just looking for somewhere new next year but don%26#39;t think we%26#39;ll match anywhere like Prague (places visited recently Prague, Budapest, Riga and Krakow).

On another point, is U Cerneho Vola THE best pub in Prague or what? Don%26#39;t think I%26#39;ve been in a better one!

Hi Guys

Where is this pub U Cerneho Vola, going to Prague in June and think we should visit. Staying at Wenceslas Square. Is it near this ?

Thanks

U Cerneho Vola is a legendary Prague pub which, i think i%26#39;m right in saying is owned by a co-operative which ploughs any profits into a nearby blind school.

(even more reason to drink plenty of beer)

Anyway, it%26#39;s not near Wenceslas Square but its well within walking distance. The pub is in Hradcany, a district near to Prague Castle, as can be found on Loretanska. Believe me, it will be worth the walk.

Enjoy the Kozel beer at 25.50 czk
