Budget ideas please!

Hi Everyone, my husband and I are going to Prague for the first time on the 24th April for 3 nights. This is an unexpected trip as we got free flights, but as it is only a week before our main holiday to Australia, we really need to do it on the cheap.

Does anyone know how much the 119 bus from the airport currently costs and similarly the CEDAZ bus? Also what does it cost to use the Metro?

Also I would be grateful for recommendations for reasonably priced restaurants.

Many Thanks

www.cedaz.cz/about-transport-services.php

prices vary with Cedaz depending on which of the services you use but the website has details.

You can buy a 3 day ticket (300czk I think) that will cover you for buses and metro,just make sure you stamp the ticket on the first bus tram or metro you use,no need to stamp it after that but keep it with you at all times.

There is a transport Authority stand at the airport where you can buy these tickets ,staff speak English.

Reasonably priced restaurants are everywhere - just try and go to places that look as though they are frequented by locals and not tourists. You will find that in general, wherever you go, even the smallest and smokiest pubs, the standard is much higher than your average pub in England, and much better value as well.

Most places will have an English menu, even those off the beaten track. Don%26#39;t be afraid of some of the terrible translations - just take a risk and you won%26#39;t be disappointed :) And don%26#39;t give up and go to pizza/%26#39;Italian%26#39; places or burger bars - you will miss out on some fine Czech pub grub if you do. Nothing beats a big plate of guláš s knedlíky or vepřové koleno (you have got to try the second one of these, even if you don%26#39;t eat anything else while you are there!)

One more thing - don%26#39;t pay more than 35 Crowns for a beer - if they advertise it at more than that, walk on, and there are plenty of recommendations on this front further down in this forum.

Have a nice time!

3 day transport ticket is 330Ck but you can buy a 24 hour ticket for 100Ck. By my maths it saves you enough for a decent half litre of beer.

Thanks for all that. Can you just confirm that I can buy one ticket from the airport that will cover me for the 119 bus and the metro (with a change from green to red). I%26#39;ve been reading through the forum and have been a bit confused as to whether this is possible. I only really want a one day card as my husband and I like to walk.

Thanks

|||

Yep - your one-day card will cover anything that is within the Prague public transport remit, i.e. trolleybuses, buses, trams, metros, even trains.

Don%26#39;t try to use it on a taxi, though :)

Hi me again! I really meant a 75 minute ticket, not a one day ticket. Can I buy one that covers me for the bus and metro with a change?

|||

Of course - as long as your journey doesn%26#39;t take longer than 75 minutes you can use your basic ticket on any means of public transport necessary to get to where you are going.

|||

Yes, you can. Adult transfer ticket is 26 Kc, you can use any tram/metro/bus for 75 (or 90) minutes after it was stamped, doesn%26#39;t mater how often you want to change trams etc. You can also buy them from a vending machine that is located near the 119 bus stop at the airport (you need coins though)

For some cheap lunch look for %26quot;lunch menus%26quot; (poledni menu) - it%26#39;s common in most restaurants and pubs. There are usualy only a few dishes to chose from, but it is not so expensive (under 100 Kc) and the food is good. If the drinks are not included in the menu (as they usualy are not) don%26#39;t be surprised when you find out that a glass of sprite or something can cost about 40 Kc or even more. Lunch menus are usualy served between 11 am and 2 pm.

So-called chinese restaurants offer strange things called food that are very cheap and usualy don%26#39;t move...

If you are looking for something even cheaper try asking some university students, they are experts at eating cheaply :D

I love the Vietnamese (%26quot;Chinese%26quot;) places! - but don%26#39;t try and work out what kind of meat it is. It tastes great, though (and is cheap) :)

It is becoming almost a Czech national dish - %26quot;Kung pao s nudličkama%26quot; - like Chicken Tikka Massala in the UK!

Thanks everyone, I%26#39;ll let you know how I get on.
