Sales tax in Prague

Is it true that hotels and resturants close to the city center charge 19% tax?

|||

there is a VAT charge on all goods and services in EU countries ,this varies from country to country (in the UK it is 17.5%) you will find this charge is incorporated in all goods and services and will often see it as a tax charge on receipts,but it should not be in addition to any prices shown unless clearly marked as such.

Yes, it is 19% but as Gus indicated, it has nothing to do with being close to the city center. The VAT is incorporated into the final price of goods and services (many receipts will show the breakdown).

Here is an overview of VAT in the Czech Republic.

So then, if my Hotel confirmation states a certain price which clearly says includes tax - then I won%26#39;be charged VAT in addition? Do returants charge extra for bread and water? Will there be 19% Vat added to my resturant bill?

yes,you should not have to pay additional charges.

Some resturants have a cover charge for water,bread condiments etc,this is usually 25-50 crowns,i have only been charge this in a couple of places and it has been clearly marked on the menu.

Thanks so much! Another question - Is it fairly easy to take the train from the airport to our Hotel. We don%26#39;t mind a little walking. The Hotel is charging 25 euro for car service. We are staying at Hotle Tyl. Thanks again!

No direct train. You%26#39;d have to buy a transport ticket -- take the 119 bus to Dejvicka (stamp ticket on boarding). Take the Dejvicka to Namesti Miru stop. It is a 10 minute walk from there. Probably take a bit more than 1 hour travel time.

Left out a word -- take the Dejvicka metro (subway) to Namesti Miru.
